Day-by-Day Route Breakdown
Day 1: Holyhead → Four Mile Bridge
32.8 km / 20.4 mi · 435m↑ ·A big opening day covering the entire Holy Island coastline. From St Cybi's Church the route heads south through the RSPB South Stack reserve with its clifftop seabird colonies and lighthouse views, then past Holyhead Mountain and through a string of rocky coves to Trearddur Bay. After a break at this sandy resort, the path continues past dramatic sea arches at Bwa Du and along low dunes to Four Mile Bridge, where Holy Island reconnects with mainland Anglesey.
Day 2: Four Mile Bridge → Dwyran
43.5 km / 27.0 mi · 238m↑ ·The longest day but relatively flat. From Four Mile Bridge the route crosses to Rhosneigr via RAF Valley and the broad sweep of Traeth Crigyll. Continuing south, the path passes Cable Bay's burial chamber and the Church in the Sea at Porth Cwyfan before reaching Aberffraw. Beyond Traeth Mawr beach and the Malltraeth estuary cob, the trail enters Newborough Forest — home to red squirrels — with the option to detour to Llanddwyn Island. The day finishes at quiet Dwyran village.
Day 3: Dwyran → Penmon
37.2 km / 23.1 mi · 404m↑ ·A varied day along the Menai Strait and eastern coast. The path passes Anglesey Sea Zoo and crosses through Menai Bridge town beneath Telford's Suspension Bridge. Following the strait's wooded shoreline, the route enters Beaumaris with its UNESCO castle and Georgian architecture, then continues northeast past Traeth Lleiniog and along the coast to Penmon Point, where the distinctive black-and-white striped lighthouse marks the island's easternmost tip with views to Puffin Island.
Day 4: Penmon → Amlwch Port
41.5 km / 25.8 mi · 566m↑ ·The toughest day with the most climbing. From Penmon the trail crosses Mariandyrys Nature Reserve's limestone commons and descends through woodland to Llanddona Beach. After following vast Red Wharf Bay to Benllech, the path continues to Moelfre fishing village and its RNLI heritage. The route crosses the Traeth Dulas estuary, passes natural arches at Tyllau Duon, and follows undulating cliff tops past Port Eilian to finish at historic Amlwch Port.
Day 5: Amlwch Port → Church Bay
31.2 km / 19.4 mi · 330m↑ ·A spectacular day along the wild north coast. From Amlwch Port the path passes Bull Bay and the abandoned Victorian brickworks at Porth Wen, then traverses dramatic cliff tops past Wales's most northerly point at Dinas Gynfor. At Hen Borth, low tide reveals ancient petrified forest remains. The trail continues past Cemlyn Bay's tern colony, rounds Wylfa Head, and through Cemaes fishing village before reaching Church Bay and its thatched folk museum.
Day 6: Church Bay → Holyhead
22.7 km / 14.1 mi · 147m↑ ·An easier final day heading south along the northwest coast. From Church Bay the path follows heather moorland and cliff tops where grey seals are frequently spotted. The route passes Porth Trwyn's secluded cove, crosses gentle farmland around Penrhyn Bay, then skirts the Afon Alaw estuary through Penrhos Nature Reserve. The trail follows Penrhos Beach back to Holyhead, completing the circuit at St Cybi's Church.
